We hope you've had a great spring break. The Spalding High School Science Club certainly did! The SHS Science Club traveled to Florida for an amazing STEM adventure. Sixteen students and seven adults experienced: the Kennedy Space Center Museum, a NASA astronaut training experience (Mission to Mars), a satellite launch, a visit to the Cocoa Beach Pier for swimming and dinner, the Newfound Harbor Marine Institute for Sea Camp in Big Pine Key (California snorkeling, kayaking, shark long-lining, algae and squid dissection, coastal ecology studies, and marine biology studies), a visit to Everglades Alligator Farm for an airboat ride and alligators, and so much more. Science is awesome and learning is fun! A giant "Thank You" to trip leader, teacher and science club sponsor Jane Burke, all of the adult chaperones and all of the amazing Partners in Education that helped make this trip a reality. Partners include: First National Bank of Griffin, Central Georgia EMC Grant, Scanlon Engineering, Knights of Columbus, GSCS PIE Grant, and many generous individual donors who provided funding to make this amazing educational experience possible.

In February, nine Spalding High School students attended the Center for Civic Engagement’s Youth in Government Expo at St. Simons Island. They participated in five specialized academies: Diplomacy, National Security, Media, Local Government and Cybersecurity. Anna Foster, Kolton Stutes and Mary Francis Noble focused on leadership and local governance. They explored local government careers, learned about decision-making processes and participated in simulations. Anna Foster received the state's top award for "Ethics in Local Government" and earned a leadership position at next year's Youth Assembly in Atlanta. Rhoda Osemweakhae participated in the National Security Academy, where she participated in simulations that challenged her with threat assessments, intelligence analysis and crisis management. Rondell White, Michael Oliver, Kayden Skelton, Sam Godat and Jon Walker Blalock represented Israel, Iraq, and the Czech Republic in the Diplomacy Academy, also known as Model United Nations. They studied diplomacy careers and leadership styles, wrote and presented resolutions, debated and voted on them in committees and the assembly. Overall, all nine students gained a deeper understanding of government operations at local, state, national and international levels. They also gained a greater understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and explored future career paths.
